Sweet spot

The sweet spot is the section of the paddle face, usually somewhere in the upper middle, that gives the most solid and predictable response when the ball makes contact there. Hits closer to the edges or the tip tend to feel harsher, lose power, and send the ball off at less predictable angles.

Paddle shape and core design both affect the size and location of the sweet spot. Wider, standard shaped paddles usually spread the sweet spot over a larger area, which is one reason they are often recommended to newer players, while elongated or narrow shapes concentrate it into a smaller zone further from the handle.

A frequent mistake is judging a paddle only by its listed specs without considering how forgiving the sweet spot feels in play, since two paddles with similar core thickness and face material can still feel very different off center. Consistently mishitting the ball toward the paddle's edge is also often a sign of grip size or swing timing issues rather than a flaw in the paddle itself.
