Paddle core
The honeycomb inner layer of a paddle, usually polymer. Thicker cores, around 16 mm, feel softer and more controlled.
The paddle core is the material sandwiched between the two face layers of a pickleball paddle. Most cores use a honeycomb structure made from polymer, though older or budget paddles sometimes use aluminum or Nomex. The core shapes how the paddle feels and sounds on contact more than almost any other part of the build.
Core thickness is one of the biggest factors buyers weigh. Thinner cores, often around 11 to 13 millimeters, tend to feel firmer and transfer more power with a louder pop. Thicker cores, closer to 16 millimeters, absorb more shock and give softer, quieter control, which many players prefer for dinking and blocking hard shots near the net.
When comparing paddles, look at the stated core thickness and material rather than assuming all polymer cores play the same, since cell size and foam density also affect feel. A common mix up is confusing the core with the face material. The core governs power and feel, while the face, usually carbon fiber or graphite, governs spin and durability.
