Court shoes

Shoes built for lateral movement with flat, grippy soles. Running shoes are designed for forward motion and roll more easily.

Pickleball court shoes are built for the sport's constant side to side movement, with flatter, wider soles than running shoes and rubber compounds designed to grip a hard court surface. Many share designs with tennis or volleyball shoes, which face similar lateral demands.

Running shoes are built to move a foot forward in a straight line, with soles and cushioning designed for repeated heel to toe impact. On a pickleball court, that same rounded, forward focused sole can roll or slide during the quick lateral cuts and pivots the game requires, increasing the chance of an ankle rolling awkwardly.

Indoor and outdoor courts also call for different outsole patterns, since a tread built for grip on rough outdoor concrete can feel sticky and grabby on a smooth indoor gym floor, and vice versa. A common mistake is grabbing an old pair of running or basketball shoes for pickleball simply because they are already sitting in the closet.
